Door-to-Door Saturday Mania

Well, today many of us went out for the largest door-to-door part of the local campaign season. As we talked to various people I believe that we felt a sense of optimism for this election. I believe that in these final days, as we carry signs, make calls, or greet people, we need to keep that achieving spirt.

It is also at this point that I would like to mention that around Halloween is definitely a great time to campaign. Also, I would like to know if anyone could e-mail me a copy of the picture taken with the College Democrats and Dr. Daniel Mongiardo. My e-mail is millermz@comcast.net. Thanks, and keep up all the good work!

Young Voters Rights

Now, as you know we College Democrats are currently trying to get Democrats elected. Makes sense. However, we also try to reach out and support our various democratic ideals too. So here's a chance for you to help do just that by protecting young people's right to vote.

That's right. As you know this government is set up on a complicated system which, among many things, helps to protect it's citizens liberties and rights. Well, the right to vote is being denied for many young student's this year, and it is time we got involved.

I'll let MTV's Vote or Lose subsidiary MTV's New Voters Project explain.

New Voters Project - Young Voters Right to Vote

You're registered. You're planning to vote. And maybe you're thinking your job is done, right? Think again, my friend. There's plenty you can do to make sure that young voters aren't forgotten this year. Even as young Americans are fighting to protect civil rights around the world, students here at home are routinely being denied the right to vote. That's why we've launched a petition to protect the rights of voters our age. Click this link to sign the petition and make them pay attention to us: http://www.newvotersproject.org/petition

Legally, everyone has the right to vote where they live, even if it's your address at school. But some local election officials don't like this fact, and they often try to scare students into not voting, or create legal barriers to stop them from casting ballots.

Recently in New Mexico, a group of politicians attempted to force tens of thousands of newly registered voters to meet strict ID requirements. The move could have kept thousands of our peers in New Mexico from voting this November, but thanks to the work of our New Voters Project organizers on the ground in New Mexico, the judge dismissed the case.

In another instance, county District Attorney Oliver Kitzman tried to intimidate Prairie View A&M University students in Texas from voting. He went so far as to threaten to prosecute students who declared Prairie View as their permanent residence.

At George Mason University, 2,000 student voter registration forms were rejected by the local board of elections because students used their campus addresses. Election officials even called up some students and tried to get them to change their campus addresses back to their home addresses. Eventually the students who tried to exercise their right to vote at school were told the registration forms had been lost!

Sign the Petition for Student Voting Rights today, and help protect not only your own rights, but the rights of our peers nationwide to go to the polls in November. Sign the petition today at this link: http://www.newvotersproject.org/petition Your right to vote won't defend itself.

Upcoming Meeting and Letters to Voters

The upcoming meeting will be tommorrow Tuesday, October 19. at 8:30 on the 3rd floor of Grise hall. We need to wait outside the Political Science department if it's locked, because Kyle will be there soon around 8:30.

Also, as Kyle mentioned, Bunning and Mongiardo are now both polling at 43%. Mongiardo has a very good chance for the senate and we need to do alll we can to help him and all other candiates.

Kyle has some addresses of voters that we can send letters to if you would like to. This is an especially good option for those of you who have a busy schedule keeping you from door-to-door trips and the phone banks. Contact Kyle for more information at kyle.gott@wku.edu.

Also, Kyle can give you a ride to the phone banks if you need one. Just be sure to contact him at kyle.gott@wku.edu.

3rd Debate Closes Series

Well, Kerry showed to many that 3-0 is a possible debate 'score.' With a lesser crowd at DebateWatch 3 I think we still represented, and Kerry obviously did, very well. Now is the time to highlight on that success, by writing letters to media organizations, going door-to-door, and phone banks. We sweeped the debates now let's try to sweep the neighborhoods.

Different Meeting Location Tonight

Tonights meeting is going to be a little different.

We will be located tonight at the Regional Democratic Rally in Barreny County. A van should be leaving to the event and if you contact Kyle he will have details on that. If you plan on driving yourself, a good option, then the directions are listed at the bottom.

Last note: don't forget the debate watch this Wednesday. The event will be held at the same location, by Guthrie Tower. If you can come, and we'd love for you too, then we will have a table set up at 7:00. Help out at the table, and watch the debate.

Directions:
The location of the 2nd District Congressional Rally is at 3690 N. Jackson Hwy. Glasgow, KY 42141. For those of you driving yourself, here are the directions: Take I-65 North toward Louisville for 14.8 miles. Then take the Cumberland Parkway (Louie B Nunn pkwy) exit 43 toward Glasgow. Stay on Louie B Nunn Parkway for 10.8 miles. Then take US 31-E exit # 11 toward Glasgow/Scottsville. Turn left onto 31-E North. Go 5.3 miles and end at 3690 N. Jackson Hwy.

Angry Bush?

Well, Kerry came out looking strong yet again. Kerry has already done great on two debates and now there remains the third. I hope that this will sway some more indecisive voters to Kerry. Yet there are still more ways to help achieve a Kerry/Edwards victory. Just ask Kyle or go down to the Bowling Green Democratic Headquarters and there should be plenty to do.

Town Hall Debate

Tonight is the second Presidential debate. If Kerry can be a strong as he was last time, and Bush as flustered then I fell confident that it will go well. The meeting is a town-hall style which means there will be a moderator but all the questions will be asked by the audience. Tune in at 8 central.

What, no meeting? Oh yeah, fall break...

Yes, that's right. No meeting this week. It's good to rest up, or in some people's cases go home and do campaign work there. So rest, relax. Put Fahrenheit 9/11 in your DVD, because it does come out tommorrow (10/05.) Plus the vice-presidential debate is tommorrow which begins tommorrow at 8. So keep busy, have a fun break, and go Kerry.

Great Debate

Well, DebateWatch was very succesful. We had several new people sign up onto our mailing list. Plus we registered a few voters. Not to mention the numerous pins, stickers, and signs we gave away.

Most important of all though is we got to see Kerry pull off a succesful debate win. It is agreed all around that Kerry was the strongest candidate, and from the look of this CNN article he's polling better too.

Now, just take some of that energy and help volunteer at the local democratic headquarters (the old diner by South Campus.) If you want to go door-to-door or work on phone calls the help would be greatly appreciated. So whenever you have time just go on down.

Also, one last debate note. If you have any pictures from the debate watch and would like to have me put them on the site then just e-mail them to me at millermz@comcast.net.

Thanks
